Prime Area’s of Learning

These three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building a child’s capacity to learn and to form relationships.

Social and Emotional Development

Throughout the Early Years Foundation Curriculum the children’s learning focuses on developmental milestones that relate directly to social interactions and an awareness of self. The developmental statements focus on the children developing self-confidence and self-awareness, forming relationships with their peers and teachers and, of course, understanding how to manage their feelings and behaviours.

Great emphasis is placed upon the children exploring the world around them, and time is taken to give the children tools to verbalise and understand how they feel.

We support, foster, promote and develop a child’s:

• Personal, social and emotional well-being.

• Positive attitudes and dispositions towards their learning.

• Social Skills.

Communication and Language Development

The importance of Communication and Language underpins all other subject areas. With many varied opportunities for speaking and listening, in a one-to-one basis and in larger groups, children begin to interact collaboratively with their peers and familiar adults. They begin to negotiate plans and develop talk through play, using language to recreate and imagine experiences.  Care is taken to ensure children can begin to reflect on their learning through supported whole class discussions where teachers model language use and extend vocabulary. Our vision is to enable children to express their ideas in a coherent and creative way, making them active learners not just in terms of their communication skills, but throughout all areas of the curriculum.

We support, foster, promote and develop a child’s:

• Skills in actively listening and responding to play, stories, events, and others.

• Ability to follow instructions, ask and answer questions, share personal experiences and ideas.

• Ability to organize, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events, while exploring the meaning and sounds of new words.

• Interact with others in a variety of contexts, negotiating plans, activities and taking turns in conversation.

Physical Development

At Annabel’s Physical development of our students is encouraged through daily opportunities to be active and interactive both in their classrooms and our large outdoor environment.  Teachers focus on improvement of skills in co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement. Through physical activity using multi-sensory experiences in outdoor and indoor environments, links between cognitive development and movement are enhanced.

We support, foster, promote and develop a child’s:

• Ability to move with confidence, imagination and safety.

• Development of co-ordination and control (both enhancing fine and gross motor skills).

• Skills in handling different tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely and with increasing control.

• Understanding of the importance of physical activity.

• Positive attitude and enjoyment when being involved in physical activities.

• Ability to make healthy choices regarding food.
